Congratulations to CEPR Research Fellow Alan Taylor, who has been announced by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves as a new member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). Taylor will begin his 3-year term on the 2nd of September, replacing current external member Professor Jonathan Haskel.
The MPC is comprised of the Governor of the Bank of England, three Deputy Governors, the Bank of England’s Chief Economist and four external members, who are appointed by the Chancellor, and may serve up to two three-year terms on the MPC. Each external member has expertise in the field of economics, maintains independence, and does not represent any specific groups or regions.
Alan Taylor, who is a professor of economics at Columbia University, was appointed to CEPR’s Macroeconomics and Growth and International Macroeconomics and Finance programme areas in 2003. His interests span macroeconomics, finance, international economics, and economic history. Taylor read mathematics at King’s College, Cambridge and graduated with a PhD in economics from Harvard University. He has previously served as a Senior Advisor at Morgan Stanley and at PIMCO, acted as a consultant to various asset managers, and provided expert legal testimony in financial cases. His accolades also include receiving a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 2004 and being named a Houblon-Norman/George Fellow at the Bank of England in 2009.
In a statement released earlier today, the Chancellor of the Exchequer said that Taylor will bring valuable expertise to the MPC with his ‘substantial experience in both the financial sector and academia.’ You can read the full statement released by the MPC here.
