Andy Sumner is Research Fellow in the Vulnerability and Poverty Reduction Team at the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, UK and a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Global Development, Washington, DC. He is a cross-disciplinary economist. His research relates to poverty, inequality and human wellbeing, with particular reference to poverty concepts and indicators, global trends and MDG/post-MDG debates. This has led to recent collaborations with Oslo and Harvard University, UNICEF and UNDP. He has also conducted work for Google and the World Bank and in 2010 was seconded to DFID Policy Division as a Senior Adviser. He is a council member of the Development Studies Association (DSA) and the European Association of Development Institutes (EADI).
In 2010 he contributed to the UNDP ‘MDG International Assessment' for the MDG summit and the Commission for Africa report, ‘Still Our Common Interest'. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and five books and is series editor for Palgrave MacMillan's Rethinking International Development. Most recently his research on the 'new bottom billion' or the 960 million poor people living in middle income countries (MICs) has been covered by the Economist, Voice of America, Fox News, and the Guardian, and informed the UK Parliament's International Development Committee's inquiry into aid to India.
