Appointments

The researchers in the CEPR network are appointed either as Research Fellows, Affiliates, or Associates within the Centre's Programme Areas. Each Programme Area has a Programme Director, who provides intellectual leadership and direction for their Area.

Fellows are established researchers whereas Affiliates are promising researchers who have completed their PhD within the past seven years (with extensions for maternity / paternity leaves, or career breaks due to severe illness). Occasionally, a researcher is involved in only one CEPR research project and so is appointed as a Research Associate to participate in that project's activities.

The Appointments Process

Every two years (i.e., in 2023, 2025, etc.) CEPR appoints new members through a two-step procedure.

In the late spring of an appointments year, the existing body of CEPR researchers are invited to nominate 1 Affiliate and 1 Fellow. Each nominee can be nominated for at most two Programme Areas by each nominator. A list of existing CEPR members is always available here to avoid nominating someone who is already a member.

In October, the Appointments committee (consisting of the CEPR President, Vice-President for Appointments, and the relevant Director for each Programme Area) evaluates the nominations received and appoints up to 8 new members (net of disappointing inactive current members) in each Programme Area.

In the Appointments process, CEPR strives to promote diversity along several dimensions. In addition, the Centre is committed to foster the careers of junior scholars.

The Re-Appointments Process

Each new appointment is for a first term of 4 years.

Fellows are considered for re-appointment based exclusively on their active participation to CEPR activities (which include the Discussion Paper series, VoxEU, e-books, workshops, conferences and other scientific and/or policy events, etc.) in the previous four years.

Affiliates are considered for re-appointment and promotion to Fellow status based on their scientific standing and their active participation to CEPR activities in the previous four years.

Exceptions to the above criterion can be considered in the case of career breaks due to maternity or paternity leaves, severe illness, or involvement in top policy positions that prevent a researcher from continuing to be productive in research activities including active participation in CEPR activities.
