Congratulations to CEPR Research Fellow and co-founder of the CEPR Research and Policy Network on Geoeconomics, Christoph Trebesch, who has been awarded the 2024 Hermann Heinrich Gossen Award by the Verein für Socialpolitik.

The award, named after Prussian lawyer Hermann Heinrich Gossen (1810–1858), is awarded annually to an economist under the age of 45 from the German-speaking world, in recognition of their ‘internationally recognised research achievements’. The award aims to promote the globalisation of economics.

Christoph Trebesch is a Research Fellow in both the International Macroeconomics and Finance programme and the Political Economy programme. He also leads the CEPR RPN on International Lending and Sovereign Debt and co-founded the CEPR Research and Policy Network on Geoeconomics in 2023, which he remains involved with as part of the Steering Committee. Christoph is Director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics research area at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and Professor of Macroeconomics at Kiel University. His research intersects international finance and macroeconomics, economic history, and political economy, with expertise on sovereign debt, financial and debt crises, China’s role in global finance, and the economics of populism.

Regina T. Riphahn, Chairwoman of the Verein für Socialpolitik, praised Christoph as a ‘figurehead of German cutting-edge research’ and stated that his work ‘is highly topical’ and a ‘valuable contribution to science and society’.
