Jan-Pieter Krahnen

Jan Pieter Krahnen is the Founding Director emeritus of the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE, and a retired Professor of Finance at Goethe University’s House of Finance. His research has focused on the design of financial institutions and financial products, with special attention to corporate control, incentive alignment, and effective banking and capital market regulation. Krahnen is a CEPR research fellow and co-head of its Research and Policy Network “European Financial Architecture”. He was President of the European Finance Association in 2011, and Vice-Chair of Verein für Socialpolitik (aka, German Economic Association) in 2018. Publications have appeared, among others, in the Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Financial Stability, and Experimental Economics. In policy-related work, Krahnen served on the European Commission’s High Level Expert Group on Structural Reforms of the EU Banking Sector (“Liikanen Commission”) in 2012 and, from 2008-2012, on the Expert Group “New Financial Architecture” (Issing-Commission), advising the German government on issues relating to the global financial crisis. Later, he served on the Group of Economic Advisors (GEA) at the European Securities and Markets Agency (ESMA, 2011-2016), Paris; he is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Finance
