Following the release of the much-awaited Draghi Report,  EC President Ursula von der Leyen outlined her vision for a new Commission that closely follows the Draghi report as a blueprint. Mario Draghi has recommended an “update of competition policy”, and notably in line with that, the Mission Letter to Commissioner Designate Ribera calls for a “Clean, Just and Competitive Transition” and mandates her to “modernize competition policy”.  What should this “modernization” look like? Is it right, and is it achievable? How does one operationalize Draghi’s recommendation that “competition, industrial and trade policy interact closely, and must be aligned as part of an overall strategy”? This will be at the core of the questions that Commissioner Designate Ribera will be asked at her Confirmation Hearing. What do we think the right answers should be?
