Private credit has expanded from non-bank credit for mid-sized, risky firms to larger firms and broader markets. The expansion of this market impacts firms and financial markets at an accelerating pace: in 2023 alone, 123 BUSD was raised for private credit funds, from pension funds, endowments and other institutional investors, according to the Financial Times. A recent report by the IMF documents the rapid growth of this market in North America, and increasingly Europe, and examines potential financial stability concerns of this development.
In a panel discussion with sector experts from the US and Europe, we will discuss how private credit works; what drives the rise of private credit; how the rise of private credit affects other parts of the financial system, including banks; and the outlook for Europe.
